Day 17 Wednesday May 5/21 "Restorative Bliss" The Vagus Nerve

There is a big nerve that is the communication superhighway between the brain and the heart, lungs and digestive system.

When this nerve has good tone, it means we are more resilient to stress and able to recover more quickly.

Also, good vagal tone corresponds to lower inflammation and better heart health and digestion.

In yoga, our most important tools for increasing vagal tone are deep diaphragmatic breathing, slowing our exhale and retaining the breath out for a moment, and SOUNDING, chanting, singing, and honeybee (brahmeri) breath are all powerful tools for toning the vagus nerve.

Meditation is also helpful for increasing vagal tone.

In non yoga ways, cold water plunging is known to be good for vagal tone, as are probiotics and omega 3s.
