About Yoga with Angie & Friends
& "Giving 67"
We are an online studio bringing people together in their love of gentle yoga and philanthropic pursuits since the summer of 2019.
Giving back has been a core value in our community since day one.
We are very passionate about our mission to empower people with the tools to practice yoga safely while making a difference in the world; modeling a progressive business model that gives back more as we grow.
THE YOGA
The yoga inside our online studio is gentle and focuses on SAFE alignment and LISTENING to your body.
It is not one size fits all, because we are all so different and have different needs.
Practicing at home, you don't have a yoga teacher standing over you like you do in a studio, but you CAN empower yourself with all the knowledge and techniques that teachers and yoga therapists use to keep you safe and use them on yourself.
I teach all of this, so you will be able to assess your OWN alignment, your OWN body while honouring your own awareness and knowledge of yourself (which is usually superior to someone else's knowledge of your body, because you are the one LIVING in it) to keep yourself nice and safe while you practice at home in your pajamas, with your dog (or iguana).
These are invaluable skills and tools you can take with you into any setting, online or in studio.
THE YOGA THERAPY
Yoga therapy is simply the application of yoga tools (like breath, postures, mudras, mantras, meditation etc.) towards specific ailments or manifestations.
Every yogic technique carries with it an effect or an outcome. Once we know the effect of each technique, we can effectively apply it to whatever the student or group needs.
For example, if someone suffers from anxiety, or sleeplessness, or back pain, or rotator cuff injuries, or depression... there are particular yoga poses, breath techniques, and other yogic tools I would prescribe in each situation, tailored to the needs of the student or the group. I often theme our classes around some of these specific therapeutic foci. You can search them on the website HERE.
This differs from a generic yoga class that doesn't address specific issues and outcomes, but rather, is focussed on overall general health or movement.
THE YOGA THERAPIST
I am the resident yoga therapist here.
My name is Angie Edgson.
I am Metis.
My life has been a dance between fitting in and functioning inside the dominant settler culture while recognizing and nurturing the parts of myself that are a beautifully wild and unruly; deeply connected to nature and its healing properties.
In a way, my discovery of yoga has been a reflection of that dichotomy: sun and moon, masculine and feminine, active and passive, all wrapped up inside the self.
I learned the traditional yogic teachings in the foothills of the Himalayas, at the source, in Rishikesh, Northern India in 2008. All of which felt more like a remembering than learning it for the first time.
I am grateful to my teacher: Yogrishi-Visvaketu for igniting a light inside me and showing me how to share it with the world.
His joyful, lighthearted presence was just what I needed to heal heart and body.
After my time in India, I embarked on learning yoga therapy at the Kripalu institute with Joseph and Lillian Lepage of Integrative Yoga Therapy.
Blending the traditional, the therapeutic and the intuitive, I began teaching studio classes right away and immersed myself in the world of learning from my students.
I am grateful to every soul who stepped through the door.
Years of in person studio teaching provided a depth of knowledge that now allows me to teach yoga effectively and powerfully online.
I am passionate about student SAFETY and believe everyone should be given the tools to know how to keep themselves safe and independent for the long term.
I love to support students in finding a gentle home practice they love that keeps them strong and balanced well into their 50's, 60's, 70's and beyond.
Lately, I have been becoming obsessed with the giving back aspect of our community.
In first nations teachings, we learn to consider the impact of our decisions on the next SEVEN generations.
Seven.
In the current dominant culture, we are lucky if even one generation is considered, in this climate of self serving corporations and greed.
So, this is where I spend most of my time now, dreaming up ways to get the word out, to inspire change, so we can take care of issues on the planet for the benefit of everyone, instead of just stockpiling more wealth for personal use.
I would be honored for you to join me on this mission.
THE GIVING
The giving back aspect of our work is THE most exciting and fun part of what we do.
We will increase our donation rate 1% every 100 new members. Our goal is to reach a 67% donation rate where 67% of our profits will be given to worthwhile organizations who work for positive change on the planet, whether it is in a humanitarian or environmental domain or in helping animals.
I believe in the yogic principle of "aparigraha" which translates as non-greed. It is the teaching wherein you give excess away to those who need it, once the needs of your family are met.
It is the principle by which I would love to see the world operate instead of the current system driven by greed and profit.
I believe we can effect change, just by us voting with our wallets for businesses that operate with integrity and consideration for making a positive impact in the world.
